Unlike traditional financial modeling tools, users never write formulas or manipulate spreadsheet cells. They describe their business in plain terms and Profitual generates the model automatically.

## Core Philosophy: Building Blocks

Users define their business using building blocks rather than cells:

- **Revenue**: subscriptions, one-time sales, services, volume × price models
- **OpEx**: salaries, software, rent, marketing, travel, contractors
- **Team**: headcount plans with salary data, hiring dates, role-level cost modeling
- **Payroll, capital, debt, fundraising, grants, and taxes** each have their own dedicated block types

The platform automatically generates a complete 3-statement model (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement) that updates in real-time as assumptions change. No AI or ML in the modeling itself — it's deterministic math, so results are reproducible and auditable.

## Andy AI CFO

Andy is an AI financial analyst included in every paid plan. Andy connects to QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, and Slack and:

- Reviews the books on a daily or weekly cadence (tier-dependent)
- Emails Smart Alerts when something notable happens: anomalies, variance call-outs, cash surprises, burn-rate changes
- Delivers Smart Alerts to Slack channels
- Answers natural-language questions in chat with real-time context from both forecast and actuals
- Generates AI narratives and analyzes uploaded documents (PDFs, images, spreadsheets)
- Produces in-chat visualizations
- Generates invoice PDFs and schedules emailed report snapshots
- Reads accounting data and proposes changes to the Profitual plan — a human reviews and approves before anything is applied; QuickBooks write operations are disabled as a safety measure
